Description:
Fan community for canonically queer characters
Welcome to Canon Queer, a community for discussion and fanworks about canonically lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, non-binarily gendered, and otherwise queer characters from any fictional source! The following question-and-answer series has been selected to explain the purpose of this community. If you have a question that is not covered here, please feel free to ask in the community itself or in e-mail.

Who can post?

Any member of the community can post. Membership is open, and that won’t change unless we have troll problems.

What can members post?

Any discussion or fanworks pertaining to canonically queer fictional characters—meta, fic, fan art, videos, icons, etc.

Is this a slash and/or femslash comm?

Not exactly. We’re looking for anything about canonically queer characters. That can include fic that fits many traditional slashy tropes as long as at least one major character is queer in canon, but it also includes works that don’t have a pairing at all and everything in between. So if your favorite character is gay and you have a fic about that character fighting space pirates or racing a dragon around the world, we’d love for you to post it here, whether your protagonist has a love interest in the story or not. On the other hand, if the fic you’re thinking about is a romance between two characters of the same sex or gender, and neither can be definitively said to be queer based on the source text or creator statements, it would be more appropriate to post that fanwork to a different community.

What counts as canonically queer for the purposes of this community?

*The character has had or sought a romantic and/or sexual relationship with a person of the same sex or same gender in canon.
*The character has expressed sexual desire for a character of the same sex or same gender in canon.
*The character self-identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, same-gender-loving, or otherwise open to same sex or same gender relationships.
*The character has been identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, same-gender-loving, or otherwise open to same sex or same gender relationships by the creator(s) of the canon or has been revealed by the creator(s) to have had a past same sex or same gender relationship.
*The character self-identifies as transgender or transsexual in canon.
*The creator(s) has/have described the character as transgender or transsexual.
*The character self-identifies as intersex or having a non-binary gender identity in canon.
*The character has been identified as intersex or belonging to a non-binary gender by the creator(s).

What kind of behavior do the moderators expect from people who post here?

We want this to be a safe space for a diverse group of participants. Language that insults others on the basis of sex, gender identity or presentation, sexuality, race, ethnicity, disability, culture of origin, faith or lack thereof, or physical appearance is strongly discouraged. If any member has a preference for a particular set of pronouns, that is the set of pronouns that should be used to refer to the person. Community members should treat each other with respect, even when they disagree with each other. Debate is welcome, but personal insults are not.
